Bon Secours Rehabilitation Centers

frequently asked questions

what is acute rehabilitation?

Acute rehabilitation is an intensive, medically-based, and interdisciplinary approach designed to help patients suffering from a severe injury (like stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury), neuromuscular disorder, or orthopedic condition regain mobility, rebuild strength, improve physical and cognitive function, and relearn independence in their daily activities.

why should I chose acute, inpatient rehabilitation?

Studies tells us that where an individual chooses to go for rehabilitation can make all the difference is his or her recovery. An inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF), like the Bon Secours Maryview Center for Physical Rehabilitation, offers patients a more specialized and intensive program than those available at skilled nursing facilities (SNF). Moreover, IRF facilities like Maryview's provide around-the-clock skilled nursing by a staff with training and experience in rehab care while SNF's tend to provide only general nursing care.

As a result of the high-quality care of inpatient rehab, patients generally have shorter lengths of stay, and enjoy superior functional outcomes. This is particularly true for post-stroke patients who studies show tend to achieve enhanced outcomes, shorter lenths of stay, higher community discharge rates, and great independence upon discharge from an acute rehabilitation hospital.

how would you describe a typical day at the Bon Secours Maryview Center for Physical Rehabilitation?

From breakfast to bedtime, our patients are busy working hard to achieve their rehabilitation goals. Acute Rehab is an incredibly active process, one that is often physically and mentally exhausting. Patients at Bon Secours Maryview Center for Physical Rehabilitation participate in a full day of therapy sessions, community re-entry training, and patient and family education. The skills and strategies learned in therapy are also reinforced on the nursing units when patients are in their rooms and during a wide range of other goal-oriented and adaptive leisure activities. Visiting hours are held from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm.

how long does a patient typically stay in the rehab unit?

Each patient's length of stay is determined by their individual needs and progress. At Bon Secours Maryview Center for Physical Rehabilitation, the staff schedules a team conference within one week of your admission to the program in order to discuss a treatment plan, and a projected discharge date may be set at that time. Some patients also work with staff members in a family conference to coordinate discharge planning, home visits, and family training dates. Our goal is to have each patient return home as soon as possible.
