Patient satisfaction is our main goal, and we are committed to providing world-class service. Endoscopic procedures performed in the center include:

  • EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
An upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to look at the interior lining of your esophagus, your stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum) through a thin, flexible viewing instrument called an endoscope.
  • Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a test that allows your doctor to look at the inner lining of your large intestine (rectum and colon). He or she uses a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope to look at the colon. A colonoscopy helps find ulcers, colon polyps, tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding. During a colonoscopy, tissue samples can be collected (biopsy) and abnormal growths can be taken out. Colonoscopy can also be used as a screening test to check for cancer or precancerous growths in the colon or rectum.
  • HALO Ablation Therapy
This procedure is performed in conjunction with an upper endoscopy and allows the physician to treat patients diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus by removing diseased or pre-cancerous tissue in the esophagus. At this time, Harbour View Endoscopy is the only facility in Hampton Roads to offer this therapy.

We also other non-endoscopic procedures such as:

  • Esophageal Manometry
This test measures the strength and pattern of muscle contractions in the esophagus.
  • 24 Hour pH Monitoring
Physicians use esophageal pH monitoring to measure the acid content (pH) in the esophagus. A low pH for long periods indicates frequent abnormal backflow (reflux) of stomach acid into the esophagus.
  • BRAVO pH Monitoring
This procedure is typically gathers 24-48 hours of esophageal pH readings using a wireless capsule placed in the esophagus. Physicians may use this procedure to evaluate gastrointestinal reflux disease and non-cardiac chest pain.
  • Anorectal Manometry
For these tests, physicians use a thin tube to measure the movements and functioning of a patient's rectal muscles.
  • Pudendal Nerve Latency Testing
Pudendal nerve terminal latency testing will determine if your pudendal nerve, which helps control the anal sphincter muscles, is functioning normally, or if there is any delay or deficit.
  • Electromyography (EMG)
An electromyogram (EMG) measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. Nerve conduction studies measure how well and how fast the nerves can send electrical signals.
  • Paracentesis
This procedure removes excess fluid that has collected in the stomach using a long, thin needle. Physicians use this method to remove stomach pressure or pairn and treat those with cancer or cirrhosis.
