"From the time we entered the door to the time we returned to our car was just 45 minutes"
Early this summer Jim Bento’s wife Karen fell and injured her toe. Karen was in much pain and when her toe started to quickly swell, both she and Jim suspected the toe was broken. Climbing into the car to head to the hospital, they expected a typical emergency department experience — hours of sitting and waiting, finally being seen by a triage nurse, being shuffled to the treatment room, more hours of sitting and waiting, being shuffled to the x-ray department, more hours of sitting and waiting until the results came back and finally the diagnosis and treatment.
They pulled into the parking lot at Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View Emergency Department, prepared to sit and wait. This time would be very different, though, as they were soon to learn. This time would be far from typical. The Bentos would experience firsthand Bon Secours No Wait Emergency Department promise.
Jim remembers the day well. “We were seen as soon as we walked through the door of Harbour View Emergency Department. As usual, we were told a doctor would be with us shortly. Immediately, a doctor came into the room to examine Karen’s toe. This was totally unlike all our previous experiences with emergency departments where we were taken to another room, told someone would be with us soon and then waited for hours.”
This type of no wait service continued throughout Karen’s diagnosis and care. Jim continues, “The doctor ordered x-rays and we were told someone from the x-ray department would come to take Karen to x-ray before long. Again, within minutes, a person was there to transport Karen to x-ray. The doctor read the x-rays immediately, confirmed that Karen’s toe was broken and gave her instructions on how to tape it.
“These folks were incredible. The people were so cheerful and friendly. Each person we saw was very helpful and personable. The biggest difference between our experience at Harborview and other emergency departments was that each person made Karen feel as if they wanted to take care of her. One staff member was even training a new person while all this was happening, but she was still very efficient. They all made us feel as if they were there to help.
“From the time we entered the door to the time we returned to our car was just 45 minutes. We were pleasantly surprised again when, within a week of our visit, we received a thank you card from the staff of Harbour View Emergency Department. The entire experience was amazing.”
