"We gave the children an opportunity to learn what to expect in the real world"

Jackie Strickland was chosen by the Chamber of Commerce to attend a yearlong leadership program and her group decided to sponsor a youth career expo as their community project. Over 4,000 students ages14 –21 attended the event. One hundred vendors representing a broad range of occupations set up displays and provided “real world” insight for the students. The students participated in mock interviews and attended breakout sessions. Jackie says, “I was very impressed with the students. They were very well prepared and nicely dressed with résumés in hand.”

The career expo was so successful that the school system asked the Chamber to continue to sponsor the event. Jackie says, “We gave the children an opportunity to learn what to expect in the real world. They asked questions and we provided resources and information to help them make informed decisions.” Jackie hopes to be a part of the event in the future.
