green initiatives
Bon Secours embraces ecological stewardship, or green initiatives, as essential to developing a more humane world and creating a sustainable future for generations to come. The organization initiative is a system-wide, four-year plan to develop a culture of sustainability to strengthen the connection between the health of individuals, community, and environment in its services. Ecological Stewardship seeks:
- To recognize the interdependence between human health and our environment and believe in the caring stewardship of a renewable Earth for the enhancement of all life.
- A system-wide culture and consistent ethic of functioning that incorporates environmental principles into the work we do every day - recycling, reducing waste, eliminating hazardous chemicals, reducing energy use, conserving water, and advocating for change.
- A system-wide culture that understands the far-reaching impact of decisions and actions.
In order to help achieve our sustainability goals, our ecological stewardship plan includes a broad spectrum waste stream management initiative in addition to efficient recycling. Our program also incorporates a system-wide energy management initiative, sustainable design in construction and remodeling, and a partnership with Energy Star. Other projects include reduction in the use of toxic chemicals, elimination of mercury and ecologically preferred purchasing.
In 2010 all Bon Secours facilities received Practice Greenhealth Environmental Recognition Awards and committed to the Healthy Food in Health Care Pledge.
